MFM2P - Day 1, Take 3

This time a year ago I started blogging my way through spiralling through the grade 10 applied curriculum. I taught it again first semester and began my third time through teaching the course this way this morning. I decided that I would like to blog my way through it again as it forces allows me to reflect on a daily basis and gives me the opportunity to update what I am doing differently this time around.

This morning we did our first warm up. I made a duo-tang of warm ups for each student, that I wrote about here. Today was Counting Circle. My class was great - they all got up and stood in a circle-ish shape around the room. I explained that they could use their fingers to help them count and could take the time they needed and that we would start with an easy one. We began at 40 and counted up by 5. We made it around the room and everyone took their turn. This was a good start - no one said anything negative and everyone participated.

I again gave them each an exercise book where they glued the curriculum expectations and will glue examples for each topic we cover. 


Next came the beginning of 26 Squares. This time around I had them work in pairs cutting out squares from 1 by 1 to 26 by 26. On each square they wrote the side length, perimeter and area then put the square in an envelope. I did go over an example (with a 3 by 3 square) to ensure they remembered the difference between perimeter and area. Most groups finished this task and got to work on Noah's Ark for the remainder of the class.

A good start...
